Summer time that means it's time for cat owners to stay vigilant. Fleas thrive in warmer conditions, and with cats spending more time outdoors and putting themselves at risk of parasite infestation, these tiny pests can cause major discomfort for your feline friend and lead to fast-moving infestations in your home.
Even a few bites can trigger intense itching, skin infections, and allergic reactions in cats. In kittens or senior cats, heavy infestations may lead to anaemia due to blood loss.
Excessive scratching or grooming
Hair loss, especially around the tail or back
Scabs or red, irritated skin
Small black specks (flea dirt) in your cat’s fur or bedding
Fleas visibly moving through the coat
However, some cats can have flea infestations and show no obvious symptoms at all!
A single flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, and in just a few weeks, those eggs become biting adults. Fleas thrive in warm, humid environments, meaning your home is the perfect breeding ground during spring and summer. If you spot even one flea, there are likely hundreds more hiding in your home.
Here's how to keep your cat (and home) flea-free:
Most important: Consistently use prescription (i.e. from the vet) flea preventives, all year round.
Treat all pets in the household to prevent cross-infestation.
Check and groom your cat regularly to catch signs early.
Vacuum carpets, furniture, and pet bedding regularly.
Skipping even one dose of flea preventive gives fleas a window to re-infest your pet and home. Even if you don’t see fleas, stay on track as prevention is far easier than dealing with an infestation.
We are able to offer a product which is a single spot on applied only every 3 months and treats all fleas, ticks and worms - if you are interested, book a vet appointment and ask for it to be applied or prescribed.
If your cat has fleas, it's worth both treating your cat and killing the fleas in your home with an over-the-counter home spray called Indorex - just ensure to follow the directions carefully, as you need to remove all pets from the room until it's completely dried.
This product is included in our Healthy Cat Plan if you become a member, and we send out email reminders when the treatment is due so that you don't miss a dose.
We recommend that indoor-only cats still get one dose of prescription strength flea + worming treatment once a year as a preventative. Speak to our team about our indoor-only Healthy Cat Plan if your cat doesn't go outside.
